For a 15th century French maiden who saw visions of God and was burned at the stake before the age of 20, Joan of Arc remains shockingly visible in the realm of pop culture. Milla Jovovich and Jane Wiedlin have portrayed the historical icon in films as diverse as The Messenger and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and recent television series like Joan of Arcadia and Wonderfalls have attempted to modernize the concept with American protagonists (and middling ratings). Melancholic master Morrissey even took the opportunity to compare himself to the fallen war heroine in The Smiths' 1986 single, "Bigmouth Strikes Again."
